Questions

What is an open call?
An open call is an invitation from a gallery, festival or society for artists to submit work for an exhibition or programme. Unlike a competition, the main outcome is usually a place in the show, sometimes with prizes or sales on top.
How is an open call different from a competition?
A competition ranks entries and gives prizes; an open call selects work to exhibit. Many annual exhibitions do both: a jury selects the show and then gives awards to some of the selected artists.
Do I have to pay to apply?
Some open calls are free, others charge a fee per work to cover selection and handling. The fee and what it covers are listed on each call; check also who pays for shipping and insurance if your work is selected.
What do I need to apply?
Usually good photographs of the works, their titles, sizes and prices, a short statement and a CV. Some calls ask for a project proposal instead of finished work.
