G. & A. Mamidakis Foundation Art Prize 2027
Open for entriesThe G. & A. Mamidakis Foundation Art Prize 2027 commissions one large outdoor sculpture or installation in Agios Nikolaos, Crete: €15,000 and production costs covered. Deadline: 30 December 2026.

The G. & A. Mamidakis Foundation Art Prize is an annual open call for a large outdoor artwork in Agios Nikolaos, Crete. Artists from anywhere in the world propose a sculpture or installation for permanent display in the open air; the winning proposal receives €15,000, and the Foundation covers the costs of production and installation. The deadline for the 2027 prize is 30 December 2026 at 23:59 Greek time.
The prize is unusual because it ends in a permanent public work rather than a temporary show. The winning artist makes the piece between February and May 2027, and it is unveiled at a public ceremony in June 2027 before joining the Foundation's collection.
The call welcomes sculpture, installation, sound installation, mixed media, work with natural materials, land art and environmental or ecological art: any practice that brings art and nature together outdoors.

- Clarity and conceptual coherence
- The relationship between the work and its site
- How the work engages viewers
- Scale and integration into the landscape
- Technical and structural feasibility and public safety
- Sustainability and long-term maintenance
Entry Fees
The official call does not mention an application fee.
What Does the Winner Receive?
- Prize: €15,000, according to the Foundation's open call
- Production: all production and installation costs covered by the Foundation

Submission Requirements
Applications are made only through the form on the Foundation's website. Read the Terms and Conditions and the open call document on the official page before you start; they set out what the proposal must include.
Who Is on the Jury?
The selection committee is Sotirios Bahtsetzis (the Foundation's Artistic Director), George Gyparakis, Polina Kosmadaki, Nikos Navridis and Alexandros Psychoulis: artists, curators and professors from Greek universities and the Benaki Museum.
Recent winners include Danae Stratou (2025) and Caitlind Brown and Wayne Garrett (2026), whose works now stand in the Foundation's outdoor collection.
About Agios Nikolaos and the Collection
Agios Nikolaos is a harbour town on the north-east coast of Crete, on the Gulf of Mirabello. Over the years the Foundation has built up an open-air collection there, with works by Greek and international artists placed in the landscape. Each new prize adds one permanent piece, so winning means joining a growing sculpture collection that locals and visitors see every day, not a show that closes after a few weeks.
Things to Consider
- Design for the place. A proposal that responds to the Cretan landscape, light and climate is stronger than a work that could stand anywhere.
- Think about permanence. Materials must survive sun, salt and wind for years; show how the work will be maintained.
- Be realistic about production. Four months is tight for a large work; show a clear plan.
- Show safety. Public outdoor works are judged on structure and visitor safety.
- Use your portfolio. Previous outdoor or large-scale work makes a proposal more credible.
