The EMAP residency is the production residency of the European Media Art Platform, a network of 15 media art centres across Europe. Selected artists spend two months at one host, such as Ars Electronica in Linz, iMAL in Brussels or LABoral in Gijón, with a €4,000 grant, a €4,000 project budget, accommodation, travel and access to labs. Applications for 2027 close on 6 November 2026 at 2 PM CET.

The residency is for digital, media, robotic and bio art, and for cross-disciplinary work that uses technology. Every project involves a collaborating partner, who can be part of the application or found later, including through the host. Collaborators receive their own €2,000 grant.

It is open to residents or taxpayers of EU member states and eligible Creative Europe countries, such as Norway, Serbia and Ukraine.

Selected artists are invited to the kick-off conference in Gijón in March 2027, so results come before then; the call site gives updates.

Why the EMAP Residency Stands Out

Media art often needs more than a studio: sensors, robots, wet labs, motion capture or high-end computing. The EMAP residency places artists inside institutions that have this equipment and the technicians who run it. Two months is short, so the programme works best for artists who arrive with a clear plan and use the host's labs to build or test something specific.

The network is also a door to exhibitions. EMAP partners present residency results at festivals and in touring shows across Europe, so a project made in Linz or Ljubljana can travel.

Things to Consider

  • Choose hosts carefully. Match your technical needs to each host's labs.
  • Think about the partner early. Even if not confirmed, describe who the collaborator could be.
  • Budget for production. Show what the €4,000 project budget will build.
  • Submit more than one idea if it helps. Multiple applications are allowed.
