GDC Festival of Gaming 2027
UpcomingStarts 1 MarGDC 2027, now the GDC Festival of Gaming, runs 1–4 March at the Moscone Center, San Francisco: 700+ sessions, Visual Arts and Indie summits, the IGF and Game Developers Choice Awards.

The Game Developers Conference, better known as GDC, is the largest professional gathering of game makers in the world. It is now branded the GDC Festival of Gaming, and the 2027 edition runs from Monday 1 to Thursday 4 March at the Moscone Center in San Francisco. Over four days, programmers, designers, artists, producers, audio specialists and business teams meet for more than 700 sessions, workshops and summits, plus the two biggest award nights in game development.
For game artists and designers, GDC is where the industry explains how its games are actually made: post-mortems of hit titles, art direction talks, design deep dives and honest conversations about careers.
About GDC
GDC started in 1988 as a small meeting of developers in a living room in San Jose and grew into the annual focal point of the games industry. It is organised by Informa and also publishes Game Developer, the trade website. The conference has always been made by developers for developers: most talks are given by people who shipped the games they discuss, and many of the most influential ideas in game design were first presented on a GDC stage.
What to Expect at GDC 2027
- Summits: dedicated tracks for AI, Audio, Business & Marketing, Independent Games, Production & Team Leadership, Programming and Visual Arts
- Main conference sessions: talks, panels, post-mortems and roundtables across every discipline
- Workshops: hands-on, practical sessions in smaller rooms
- Festival Hall: open Tuesday to Thursday, with exhibitors, GDC Commons and the IGF Pavilion
- Business Hall: in Moscone West, for publishers, investors and private meetings
- Award ceremonies: the Independent Games Festival (IGF) Awards and the Game Developers Choice Awards
GDC for Artists and Designers
The Visual Arts Summit is the heart of the programme for artists: concept art, character and environment art, technical art, animation, lighting and art direction, usually presented through real production examples. Design sessions cover systems, level design, narrative and player experience. If you make games, or want to, these talks show the decisions behind games you know, often with early sketches, prototypes and failed ideas that never appear anywhere else.
The IGF Pavilion is also worth time: it shows the finalists of the Independent Games Festival, a good overview of the most original small games of the year.
Who Is GDC For?
- Game designers, artists, animators and technical artists
- Indie developers and small studios
- Students and graduates looking to enter the industry
- Producers, programmers and audio designers
- Publishers, investors and platform holders
Passes and Registration
GDC offers several pass types: single-day access, a pass focused on business networking, and a full Festival pass covering the complete programme. Prices rise as the event approaches, so registering early is the cheapest option; full prices and deadlines are on the official GDC website. Official hotel housing for 2027 is already open through the conference site.
Tips for Visiting GDC
Plan your schedule in advance with the online session scheduler, but leave gaps: conversations in hallways, parties and the Commons are often as valuable as the talks. Many sessions are later published on the GDC Vault, so prioritise things you can only do in person, such as roundtables, workshops and meeting people.
If you are looking for work, bring a portfolio on a tablet and business cards, and look out for portfolio and career sessions. Students can often find volunteer programmes that offer free access in exchange for working at the event, so check the official site for openings.
Planning Your Visit
The Moscone Center sits in the SoMa district, within walking distance of many hotels, and events spread across several downtown venues. San Francisco hotels fill quickly in GDC week, so book early or stay further out along the BART line. International visitors should check US entry requirements well before travelling.
