Advanced Perspective by SVS Learn
SVS Advanced Perspective is an online class by David Hohn: a review of one- and two-point perspective, then complex shapes and rooms in three-point. 18 lessons, 3.5 hours of video. In SVS Learn membership.

SVS Advanced Perspective is an online class from the School of Visual Storytelling, taught by illustrator David Hohn. After a short review of one- and two-point perspective, it moves into three-point perspective for photos and illustrations, then into the hard cases: rooms full of furniture, ellipses, inclines and declines, pyramids, cylinders and cones. The class has 18 lessons with about three and a half hours of video, and ends with a final assignment. It is included in the SVS Learn membership.
The class even takes on the impossible spaces of M.C. Escher's drawings, using them to show how perspective systems are built and how they can be bent.
What You Will Learn
- A quick review of one- and two-point perspective
- Three-point perspective in photographs and in illustration
- Perspective in action, from a bedroom to M.C. Escher's prints
- Simple objects and a whole bedroom in three-point perspective
- Ellipses in perspective
- Inclines and declines, such as stairs and ramps
- Advanced shapes: pyramids, cylinders and cones
- How to find and fix perspective problems
Who Is SVS Advanced Perspective For?
The class suits illustrators who already understand basic perspective and want to draw dramatic camera angles, tall buildings and complex interiors. Comic artists, concept art students and children's book illustrators who use high or low viewpoints will find it especially useful.
If vanishing points are new to you, start with Basic Perspective Drawing, also by David Hohn.
How the Class Works
Each chapter combines explanation with demonstration, starting from photographs so you can see three-point perspective in the real world before using it in drawings. The later chapters focus on objects that cause the most trouble, and the class closes with a demonstration of the final assignment so you know exactly what is expected. The fixing lesson is worth revisiting whenever a drawing looks wrong.
Course Structure
- Introduction and examples of three-point perspective
- Chapter 1: one-, two- and three-point perspective, with photo and illustration examples
- Chapter 2: perspective in action, including a bedroom and M.C. Escher
- Chapter 3: basic shapes, a bedroom in three-point perspective, ellipses, inclines and declines
- Chapter 4: advanced shapes (pyramid, cylinder, cone) and fixing perspective problems
- Chapter 5: final assignment and demonstration
What You Will Make
The final assignment asks you to apply three-point perspective to a scene of your own, using the shapes and fixes from the earlier chapters. It is a good test of whether you can set up a dramatic viewpoint and keep everything in it consistent.
Price and Access
The class is included in the SVS Learn membership. SVS lists its Studio membership at $29.95 a month, and class pages show a $300 annual option. A 14-day free trial is available with a card and becomes a paid subscription unless you cancel. Members also get live events and a monthly art challenge.
About the Instructor
David Hohn is an illustrator based in Portland, Oregon, whose clients include Scholastic, Random House, Electronic Arts and Nike. He teaches all three perspective classes in the SVS curriculum.
How It Fits the SVS Curriculum
Advanced Perspective opens Level 3 of SVS Essentials, which is about environments. It is followed by Practical Perspective, where David applies these methods to a bedroom, a farmhouse, a barn and a windmill, and by the vehicle, nature and environment design classes.
Things to Consider
