The Proko Perspective Course is a self-paced online course taught by Marshall Vandruff, with artwork by Peter Han. It explains perspective from first principles, from orthographic views and vanishing points to grids, the picture plane, wide-angle and curvilinear perspective, and freehand organic forms. The course has 150 lessons and more than 40 hours of video so far, with 33 lessons free. It is sold in two parts at $139 each, or $261.32 for both as a one-time purchase.

Perspective is often taught as a set of rigid constructions. Vandruff mixes those with history, studies of old masters and intuitive tricks, so the course works for artists who want to draw believable space without ruling every line. It is Proko's main course on the subject and supports almost everything else in the catalogue.

What You Will Learn

The official course page lists 14 topics, including:

  • Materials, and perspective tricks used by past masters
  • XYZ axes and one-, two- and three-point perspective
  • Grids and the picture plane
  • Planned projections and the blob approach
  • Wide angles and curvilinear perspective
  • Space folding and proximity tricks
  • Cubes, spheres and cylinders
  • Freehand and organic forms, and depth measuring systems

Who Is the Proko Perspective Course For?

Proko lists it as suitable for beginners and intermediate artists. It suits illustrators, comic artists, concept artists and painters who struggle with backgrounds, buildings, vehicles or figures in space. No previous knowledge of perspective is needed.

Proko does recommend some basic drawing experience. If you have not drawn for a while, Stan Prokopenko's Drawing Basics is suggested as a warm-up. If you only need a quick refresher on one- and two-point perspective, the free lessons may be enough.

Course Structure

The course has two parts:

  • Part 1, Understanding Perspective (114 lessons): intro to perspective, materials, depth tricks and old masters, intro to forms, orthographic views with one point and no point, XYZ, grids, eye level, the picture plane, wide angles, proximity tricks, forms, and bonus lessons
  • Part 2, Mastering the Skills (34 lessons): applying the ideas from Part 1; this part was still in progress when checked, with new videos added weekly

Lessons include lectures, critiques of student work and full start-to-finish demonstrations with commentary.

Price and Access

Each part costs $139. Buying both together applies Proko's bundle discount, bringing the course to $261.32. It is a one-time payment, not a subscription, and Proko says buyers keep access to the videos permanently. Split payments are available at checkout.

There are 33 free lessons across the two parts. Premium adds extended lessons, extra demonstrations and critiques, exclusive lessons, practice assignments, browser-based 3D models, high-resolution diagrams for printing and 1080p video downloads. Work submitted for the latest projects may appear in critique videos. Refund requests go to Proko support within 30 days.

About the Instructor

Marshall Vandruff is a long-time art teacher who describes his work simply as teaching creatives. In the course introduction he explains that he spent years learning perspective on his own, which shapes his practical, problem-solving approach. He also appears in critique videos for Proko's Figure Drawing Fundamentals.

Things to Consider

  • Time: Close to 40 hours of video, and still growing. Most students will take it over several months.
  • Materials: A pencil, a ruler and paper are enough. Premium lessons discuss rulers, triangles, protractors and paper types.
  • Pacing: Buying Part 1 first is a sensible way to test your commitment before Part 2.
  • Feedback: Post assignments in the Proko community; selected work may appear in critiques.
  • Related courses: Drawing Basics covers one-, two- and three-point perspective at a gentler pace as part of a broader foundation. Once you are confident with space, Drapery Fundamentals and the figure courses show the same thinking applied to the body.
